Bosart Brown, located on the east side of Indianapolis, includes a very rich history. The name “Bosart” actually comes from Timothy Bosart who built his brick home in 1862, which is still standing at 4704 E Washington St. Although some homes in the neighborhood dated all the way back to the mid 1800s, most of the area was developed gradually in 1910 and 1920s. Interestingly, the neighborhood school, Ralph Waldo Emerson School No. 58, was built in 1907 with later additions, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. 

Bosart Brown can be seen as having a sense of craft to it. It can be described as bohemian and diverse with a growing creative class of artists, musicians, illustrators, small business owners, etc. The neighborhood can have a very distinct look because of its Arts & Crafts agriculture, mature trees, and historic homes. Although the neighborhood does not have big cultural landmarks of its own, it does have the Bosart & Washington “Mansion”, which is a local landmark. 

The neighborhood’s location adds to its appeal. Since it is on the East Side, many cultural and greenery attractions are very nearby. Residents are minutes from Irvington's coffeehouses and boutiques, Brookside Park's greenery, and the short drive to downtown Indianapolis for concerts, art exhibits, and festivals. Locally, the Bosart-Brown Neighborhood Association keeps the area active with clean-ups, block events, and preservations that keep the storybook charm of the architecture alive.
