Martindale-Brightwood, located just northeast of downtown Indianapolis, remains a neighborhood rich in history, culture and community pride. One of the most significant parks in the area is the Frederick Douglass Park, which includes a golf course dating all the way back to 1928, a swimming pool added in 1927, sports fields, and many open greenery. Recently, in 2024, they added the Family Center, featuring a gym, indoor track, and community events. In addition, Brightwood Park is nearby, sat next to James Russell Lowell School 51 and serves as a local recreation spot within the community for children. 

Martindale-Brightwood is one of the oldest historically Black neighborhoods in Indianapolis, providing a rich history with heritage and community pride. The residents value belonging, tradition, and participation in revitalization projects shaping the area’s future. 

The area is all for providing social support, volunteer opportunities, and community stability. With Eastern Star Church their main, individuals strive to be deeply involved in community outreach, particularly through the ROCK initiative. 

Martin university is close in proximity which strives to serve adult learners and promote educational opportunity on the east side. There are also many other attractions in the area such as Oscar Charleston Park and Washington Park, both providing recreational activities. 

Martindale-Brightwood’s proximity to downtown is only 2 miles, allowing for a quick access via 25th street or I-70. This is very convenient for commuters, downtown workers, or students seeking affordability close to city amenities.
